Ståle Navrud is a professor in environmental and resource economics (ERE) at the School of Economics and Business at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU). He received his M.Sc degree in natural resource management and resource economics from the same university in 1984, his Ph.D. in ERE in 1989, and has been a visiting scholar at University of California (UC) Berkeley (1986, Fulbright Scholar 1993/94), UC San Diego (1997, 2000, 2009, 2016/2017, and University of New Mexico (2009/2010). He has extensive experience in ERE, and has published more than 100 journal articles and book chapters on economic valuation of environmental quality, ecosystem services (marine, terrestrial and aquatic), cultural heritage, landscape estethics, public health, and external costs of energy; and has co-edited three books on environmental value transfer, cultural heritage and environmental valuation in Europe. He was Review Editor (WG 2) of the 5th Assessment Report (Climate Change 2014) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and is currently Expert Reviewer for United Nations (UN) “Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services”, (IPBES) and “UN Global Reporting and Assessment of the State of the Marine Environment, including Socioeconomic Aspects”.
He has broad international experience, and have worked on 20 EU-funded research projects (European Commission (EC) DG Research (with projects both in Europe and in South East Asia), and several projects for EC DG Environment, European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), the World Bank (in Africa and South America), OECD – Environment Division, European Environment Agency (EEA), Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra, UK), Norwegian Ministry of Environment, and the Norwegian and Danish Environmental Protection Agencies. Recently he has adviced the US EPA on benefit transfer, the Danish Economic Councils on the Value of Statistical Life (VSL), the International Standardization Organization (ISO) on developing a new standard; ISO 14008 “Monetary valuation of environmental impacts” for firms’ environmental reporting, and the Nordic Council of Ministers on Marine Spatial Planning.
Ståle has an adjunct position at Menon Center for Environmental and Resource Economics
